AirZOne staff has conducted national-scale exposure studies for benzene in gasoline stations as well as measurements at refineries and oil upgrading facilities. Ambient levels and personal exposures to benzene and other airborne compounds were determined for fuel handling facilities, domestic distribution centres and at refinery facilities. Also, through contracts with Health Canada, we have developed personal exposure monitoring methods based on passive devices suitable for workplace monitoring and other indoor air quality studies. Statistical studies were designed and executed assessing personal exposures after the methods were vetted in the scientific literature. The study results have been used in assessments by government agencies of population exposures to common solvents and compounds released in refinery-based products among other substances. Through our involvement with alternative fuel strategies both in Canada and internationally, similar assessment of worker and passenger exposures to vehicle emissions has been conducted to assess the impacts of alcohol-based fuels on personal exposures and ambient air quality. Work continues with focus shifting to public health impacts of emissions from fuel additives sources.
Similarly, exposure monitoring has been conducted at refineries including measurement of typical refinery products and intermediates. Routinely, studies to assess exposures to workplace noise are conducted as well. Measures such as administrative and engineering controls are often implemented as recommended.
Worker training on “right to know” legislation and comprehensive training on related aspects such as toxicology, use and care personal protective equipment, and safe storage and handling of chemicals has been conducted routinely.
Control of work systems such as confined space entry, energy lock out, and safe maintenance practices have been developed with associated training provided in these training exercises.
The laboratory is accredited by CALA to ISO/IEC 17025 for specific tests on the scope of accreditation.
