An extensive audit of the client’s management systems and operational practices related to occupational health and safety was conducted. The audit involved the development of protocols, two rounds of in-person interviews representing all levels of management and the distribution of a field questionnaire to field staff. The audit focussed on determining the effectiveness of the client’s OHS program and providing a revised action plan to revitalize the program which had stalled and was falling short of other Canadian Gas Association performers. A review of the OHS department’s planning and organization was conducted that resulted in presenting a new strategy for managing health and safety. Program priorities and roles and responsibilities were set based on a qualitative risk assessment of operations and corporate mission statements. A detailed workshop was then organized to validate the report findings, provide bench-marking and to seek buy-on for the new program focus. Management, representing all levels of the organization were involved in the development of the first steps of an action plan focussed on a top-down approach to health and safety. The project was very well received by senior management.
